Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System for the First Time.
The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.
Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships this year.
Competitors are granted the option to contest certain calls made by the chair umpire, following the practice currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This move arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the longstanding role of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.
Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.
Case in Point
An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at every one of its events.
Further Updates
Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a ball was in or out.
Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
