The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

As any prominent honors show nears, you'll find a demand for the addition additional classifications to recognize overlooked contributions and satisfy the passions of followers with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for tabletop games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications successfully include many game types, and you can find room for most games within them.

Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition in any category in 2014
  • Another creative title was excluded in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
  • Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles globally continuing this trend for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
