Space Traveler Reveals Depression Following Wave of Harassment Post-Spaceflight
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a historic all-female space mission.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also featured high-profile passengers.
The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a public message, referring to a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the days following the flight.
She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
The researcher, who has dedicated her work to women's health research and conducted tests during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – including her scientific research and years of training to the personal milestone of her roots – was drowned out under the tide of sexist vitriol.
She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of survivors of assault.
Her own goal of reaching space was paused after an attack during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.
The Fog Begins to Lift
Months following fulfilling her dream, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she acknowledged the supporters whose support pulled her through. “Your support rescued me,” she wrote.
She concluded that despite the negativity, important benefits had resulted from the experience, including spotlight on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.
